Pause. Breathe. Write.
Pause.
Breathe.
Write.
Writing isn't just about putting words on paper—it is also an act of faith, and for some, an act of obedience. Inviting God into your writing process can change your outcome entirely. I know this firsthand, because it is exactly what has happened to me.
I have sat down to write romance books multiple times now, and each time, a different story emerges. I have leaned into the direction my writing takes me, because I feel such a strong connection with God when I open my heart to hear what it is He wants me to say on His behalf. The first time I did this, Authentically Anchored was written. The second time I did this, book #2 began to take shape as a new directive was born. (I cannot wait to share more about book #2 later this year)
So, how do I do this? I'm glad you asked!
Start with prayer.
Before you write, spend a few moments in prayer. Ask God to guide your thoughts, inspire your creativity, and help you find the words that communicate effectively. Surrender your doubts and fears to Him.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3
Be still and listen.
Sometimes, as you write, it is natural to hit a roadblock that causes us to stop dead in our tracks. The best way to beat this roadblock is to be still and listen. Sit quietly, read scripture, or reflect on what He has placed upon your heart to share.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
Write with purpose.
Your writing has a purpose, but discovering what that purpose is can be difficult. Determine if you are simply sharing a story, or if you are meant to encourage or teach others. Remember that your gifts are from God and your words can glorify Him.
For nonfiction: Focus on serving your audience by sharing truth and wisdom.
For fiction: Use your creativity to paint stories that reflect God's love, grace, and purpose.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” – Colossians 3:23
Take breaks when you feel stuck.
When frustration creeps in (and it will), step away for a moment. Take a walk and focus on all that you see along the way. This shift in perspective and thought may just jog something new within you. If it still isn't enough, take a day of rest to refresh your mind and spirit.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
Writing can be freeing. It allows you the chance to speak from your heart without reservation. When you invite God to join you when you write, you'll likely discover more within you than you realized you had all along. Take a moment to pray over your writing today, and let God work through your words.
