Your Unique Voice: Finding & Living It

Your Unique Voice: Finding & Living It

How many times have you hesitated before hitting post on social media or second guessing your words in a text or email? Maybe you've sat and thought, does this even sound like me? Or will people actually care what I have to say?

Let me first say—you aren't alone! I'm pretty sure I've done this more times than I can count, and will likely do it a million more in my lifetime. This world is hard. It celebrates trends and sameness. It feels risky to step out and share your unique voice. The keyboard warriors are quick to comment, so we shrink ourselves.

Can I share some truths to help you?

  • No one sees the world exactly the way you do.
  • No one has your experiences, your wisdom, or your perspective.
  • No one has your personality.
  • No one has the same gifts as you.

This means what you have to say is not only valuable, it's helpful to others.

So, how do you find your unique voice, and more importantly, how do you live it with confidence?

First, what is your unique voice? It's more than just the words you say, it's how you communicate, the perspective you bring, and the way you connect with others. It's shaped by your values, your faith, your experiences, and your personality.

Think about some of your favorite authors, speakers, or business leaders. Chances are, what draws you to them isn't their content, it's how they deliver it. Their voice is distinct. Their personality is electrifying. You can recognize their words, their tone, and their message instantly.

Now, imagine someone saying the same about you.

How to Find Your Unique Voice

Finding your voice isn't about forcing anything new. It's about uncovering what is already there that may be buried below the surface a bit.

Here's how you can uncover it:

  • Pay attention to what feels natural. When do you feel most you? Maybe it's when you're writing freely in your journal, speaking to a close friend, or sharing your thoughts on something you're passionate about. Those moments when you let your guard down and vulnerability rises to the surface is where you'll find your real voice.
  • Identify your core messaging. This doesn't just apply to brands and businesses. What do you stand for? What do you enjoy talking about with others that light you up? Is there anything people come to you directly to talk about? Chances are you can find your core messaging hidden among these instances.
  • Let go of comparison. I know, easier said than done, am I right? Honestly, though, if you are constantly comparing yourself to others, you will only further dampen your unique voice. Let it go.

Living Out Your Unique voice with Confidence

Once you've identified your voice, the next step is actually using it.

  • Speak and write like you would in real life. You..write. You...speak. Use only words that flow from YOU. You have great ideas, and can use those as building blocks to establish content or write your story in a way that reflects your unique voice.
  • Stay rooted in your values. I probably sound like a broken record on this subject, but there is a reason why core values are helpful. Your voice is the strongest when it's built on what matters most to you. If faith, honesty, or encouragement are your core values, let them shine through in your words.
  • Keep using it, even when it feels uncertain. The only way to own your voice is with continued use. You don't have to have all the answers or be the loudest person in the room. Just keep showing up as yourself. Write the post, share the story, pitch the idea, go all in on YOU.

Your voice is a gift. Use it well.

God gave you a perspective, a message, and a way of speaking that no one else has. So many are hesitant to share themselves with others, by being brave and boldly sharing yourself with them, you may be the encouragement they need to step out and do the same. They are waiting on YOU.

Embrace the voice God gave you. Show up as you. The world doesn't need another copy, it needs your unique voice.
