How to Write a Book Around Your Message
Your Life. Your Story. Your Message.
Whether you've lived a life filled with joy or walked over the fiery coals to get where you are today, your life tells a story. The question is...what do you do with it?
Writing a book can feel intimidating, but you can look at it as a way to serve others through what God has brought you through.
How do you write a book around your message? I'm so glad you asked.
Step One: Understand why this story matters.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What pain or experience am I uniquely qualified to write about?
- What transformation have I experienced that others need to see?
- What message do I want my reader to walk away with?
Step Two: Know who you're writing for.
Every testimony isn't for everyone, and that is okay.
Define your reader:
- Who were you before God stepped in?
- Who is still in that season right now?
Write to her. Speak directly to her heart like you wish someone had done for you.
Step Three: Start with a simple structure.
Your story doesn't have to be complicated. Here's a helpful framework:
- Before-What you struggled with.
- Breakthrough-What changed.
- After-How your life is different now.
- Lesson-What you learned and want others to know.
Step Four: Make writing a habit, not a hurdle.
You don't have to write the whole book today. Commit to writing one page, one paragraph, or even one sentence a day.
Tips:
- Use voice notes to record your thoughts.
- Refer to past journal entries.
- Keep it simple to record your thoughts wherever you are.
- Don't overthink it, write from the heart.
Step Five: Invite God into the process.
Pray before you write. Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your words. Remember, this isn't just your story, it's also your offering.
Tips:
- Begin your writing time with prayer and an invitation for God to join you.
- When sharing your story feels overwhelming, pause and pray.
- If you get stuck and don't know what to write, take a walk while listening to worship music.
- Spend time outside, either by taking a walk or sitting in silence.
Always remember, writing a book doesn't require perfection. It only takes a willing heart to take the first step. Let your message guide you. Trust that God will use it in His time for His glory.
